Summer Reading Challenge

Did you know that you can read the books from the Sheffield Children's Book Award shortlsit and take part in the Summer Reading Challenge at the same time?

All you need to do is register for the challenge at any of our Sheffield Libraries, take a look at the Book Award shortlist and decide which selection suits you best and ....read them!

All the shortlist books can be borrowed from the library but if you can't see what you want just ask the staff who will be happy to reserve a book for you.

Every time you return 2 books you will be given a sticker to add to your collectors card and also an insentive. Once you have read 6 books, you will get a certifiacte and a medal for completing the challenge. Babies and toddlers can also take part in a mini version of the challenge.

 

 

We love to hear your thoughts on books so let us know if you have a favourite new book you would like to see on the Book Award shortlist next year or tell us about any book you have enjoyed. There is a recommend a book form in the back of the Recommended Reads booklet available in all libraries.

A Boy and a Bear in a Boat wins the Branford Boase Award

Dave Shelton and his editor David Fickling have won the 2013 Branford Boase Award given annually to the author and editor of the most outstanding debut novel for children for A Boy and a Bear in a Boat published by David Fickling Books.

The book is also shortlisted for the Sheffield Children's Book Award. Lets see if the children of Sheffield enjoy the book also. Results will be announced on 28th November 2013

Stan Lee Excelsior Award Winners Announced

The Stan Lee Excelsior Award is the only nationwide book award for graphic novels and manga - where kids aged 11-16 choose the winner by rating each book as they read it!

This project was originally a special “one off special category” additional to the Sheffield Children’s Book Award, devised by the Book Award Project Team with the help of  Paul Register, librarian from Ecclesfield Secondary School. His passion for the project, lead him to continue the good work and extend and develop the project to become an annual event including schools from both Sheffield and further afield.

New Children's Laureate announced today

Sheffield sends huge congratulation to the new Children's Laureate  2013- 2015

Malorie Blackman!

Malorie was the overall winner of the Sheffield Children's Book Award with Noughts and Crosses in 2002.

Her key hopes are;

• to encourage teachers to read to children for 10 minutes every day 
• to encourage every child to have a library card! (We strongly agree with those sentiments here in Sheffield.)
• Use short stories on line to encourage further reading with young people.

Malorie says Wonder by R j Palacio is one her favourite books - ours too - see our current shortlist!

Competition Time

This year is the 25th Anniversary of the Sheffield Children's Book Award.

Enter our competition and name all the past winners of the Sheffield Children’s Book Award. The correct answers will go into a draw to win signed copies of books from the 2013 shortlist.

 

The winner will be announced at the Award Ceremony in November but entries need to be returned to the library by 19^th July.

 

Complete and return an application form in your local library including guessing who will be the Overall winner for 2013.

Well Done Annabel Pitcher- winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize

Annabel Pitcher's Ketchup Clouds has won the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2013. Her debut novel, My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece, was shortlisted for the prize last year.

The Waterstones Children's Book Prize was created nine years ago to reward and champion new and emerging talent in children's writing. It is voted for by booksellers across the country.

The Prize consists of three categories: Best Picture Book; Best Fiction for 5-12s; and Best Book for Teens.

As well as the teenage category, Ketchup Clouds won overall winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2013.     Ketchup Clouds is also on the Sheffield Children's Book Award shortlist 2013. Borrow this book (along with the 5 others) from the Young Adult category and place your vote, will this also be a Sheffield Winner?

Teachers - if you would like to take part in the 2013 Sheffield Children's Book Award, please fill out the application form attached.
Your school must subscribe to the Sheffield Schools Library Service to be eligible to take part. Please check if your school have already submitted an application form before you return. Please e-mail or post your form to the address given.
